Test Coming Up

I've been so impressed by all your work so far. You're all doing a great job with your research projects! Remember that the final projects will be due one week from today.

Also, we will be having our summative test NEXT FRIDAY. Make sure you are reviewing your notes and paying attention to further announcements in class so that you'll all be ready.

Cartoon Activity

For this activity, I want you all to go to www.toondoo.com and create your own Egyptian Cartoon. You can choose any layout you want. You cartoon should have something to do with Ancient Egyptian culture (architecture, religion, and government would all be acceptable topics!).

Here is my example:
Mummy in Egypt

Your cartoon does not have to be fancy, and does not even have to be funny. Make sure you add at least one sentence of text within the cartoon to explain your picture(s). Make sure your cartoons are classroom appropriate (like we've talked about), and be ready to explain it in front of the class on Thursday!

Ancient Egypt Song

Listen to this song and read the lyrics to learn more about Ancient Egypt and its culture.

Walk Like An Egyptian

Do you understand all the references made in the song? Is there anything mentioned that you don't remember learning about or you think we should talk more about in class?

Religion in Ancient Egypt

Ancient Egyptians practiced polytheism- which means they worshiped many gods and goddesses. Follow the link below to learn more about the gods and goddesses they recognized and the powers that each one had.

Gods and Goddesses

Click through the tabs on the side to learn more. "Story" will take you through the Egyptian version of the creation of the world, "Explore" will let you click on an image of each individual god or goddess to learn more about him/her, and "Challenge" will let you participate in a fun activity using what you've learned.

Another Great Resource!

The History Channel's website has a lot of great information that might be useful for you in your research.

History.com

The website has some really interesting facts and articles (especially if you're interested in Cleopatra!) and also has a few short videos photo galleries for those of you who like to see pictures of what you're learning about.

Here is one of the videos that I enjoyed:

Egyptian Hieroglyphics

Ancient Egyptians developed a writing system called "hieroglyphics" which used pictures to represent letters. Below is a chart of hieroglyphs that would have been used by the Egyptians matched with the corresponding letter. Your assignment is to write a secret message (that is school appropriate!) in hieroglyphics to be turned in during class on Monday. Your message only needs to be a phrase or a sentence. Below your message, write a 3-5 sentences (in English) about how you think using hieroglyphics may have impacted the lives of the Egyptians. Also, feel free to add colors and designs to your page!

Geography of Egypt Activity

The following link will take you to a website that has a fun activity you can complete to learn more about the geography of ancient Egypt. In the activity, you get to play the role of a jewelry maker who has to travel to find the supplies you need. It's a lot of fun!

This week we will begin studying the ancient Egyptian civilization. We'll be spending time in class working on a research project that will be due at the end of the unit (I will pass out a rubric in class). Keep an eye out on this blog for links to resources that can help you!

If you find a great resource that you think your classmates might like, email me the link and I will post it here for everyone to see and use.

Here's a fun song to help you remember some of the basics about the ancient Mesopotamian civilization we've been studying.
